Sophia was born and raised in Illinois (predominantly on Kickapoo, Miami, Očeti Šakówiŋ (Sioux), Peoria, Potawatomi and other native lands). She earned her BA in ethnic studies from the University of Oregon in 2018.
As an undergrad, Sophia researched the historical connection of movements for civil rights and independent living in the 1960 and 1980s (respectively). The common thread among all of Sophia’s work is underlining the need for solidarity among marginalized identities, particularly with the working class and disabled BIPOC.
Outside of APANO, Sophia is a member of Gabriela Portland (the local chapter of Gabriela USA), as well as an advocate for human rights in the Philippines. She is learning to connect the local issues of Portland’s working Filipino communities to larger issues of capitalism, identity, and the ongoing struggle for self-determination.
You might also find her on Animal Crossing New Horizons, where she is building an accessible paradise with friends.
