Why these Restaurants
This project currently spotlights six iconic Chinese American restaurants—Hung Far Low, Canton Grill, Chinese Village, New Cathay, Legin, and Wong’s King—each chosen for their profound impact on the Jade District and their significance in the broader narrative of Chinese American history in Portland. With the planned redevelopment of the Canton Grill site, APANO is dedicated to creating a space that honors both the enduring legacy of these establishments and the contributions of the Chinese American community.
These restaurants have distinguished themselves through enduring popularity and longevity, while also embodying a story of resilience, cultural innovation, and the challenges that continue to shape East Portland, from gentrification and generational turnover to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
