A Big Night for Portland’s New International District

jademarket

Oregon’s immigrant communities came out in force to celebrate Portland’s inaugural Jade International Night Market on August 23rd. Situated in the Fubonn Shopping Center, 6,000 elders, families and friends were all smiles as they enjoyed food, retail vendors and cultural performances. APANO staff and community partners worked with small businesses and local residents to envision a new economic engine for East Portland as part of the emerging Jade International District centered on SE 82nd and Division. The International Night Market is designed to support small businesses, foster a welcoming multicultural neighborhood for all communities, and increase community leadership.

One of the exciting aspects about the International Night Market is the story of how it emerged from multilingual organizing in Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Russian, Spanish, English and more over the last year. Many have remarked that this may have been one of the first public markets or street fairs primarily envisioned and led by communities of color in Portland. As Oregon’s communities of color grow and become even more influential in shaping our economic and political future, we honor the contributions of those who have come before us and prepare to create a vibrant, inclusive community -- and we hope you will join us!

Please consider taking public transit, or parking nearby and walking. There is limited parking at Fubonn, and we want to make the traveling experience to the event as pleasant as possible. There is available parking at the PCC Southeast campus which is only 2 blocks away from Fubonn.
