About the Convention
Our Keynote Speakers are Deepa Iyer founding Executive Director of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) and Jose Antonio Vargas journalist and immigrant rights activist who recently released his film “Documented”. We are also pleased to have invited remarks from candidates for US Senate - Senator Jeff Merkley and Monica Wehby and Oregon Governor - Governor John Kitzhaber and Dennis Richardson.

Our theme is Rising Tides. We are moved by the optimism and power of Asian and Pacific Islanders uniting for social justice. One can feel the tidal energy of our grassroots organizing, grounded in listening to our communities, and fostering alliances that seek to uplift all of us. Oregon is experiencing a seachange in the political landscape as our diverse communities rise together for equity that meets our specific needs and harness our energy and leadership. We invite you to join forces with APANO and help us rise to be fully engaged in the decisions that affect us.

Goals:

  • To create space for diverse Asian and Pacific Islanders to share stories, strengthen cultural connections and deepen community trust
  • To energize leaders of influence as bridges between APANO and grassroots Asian and Pacific Islander communities
  • To build power on issues that affect our communities and develop strategies for action
