APANO May 2019 Candidate Endorsements

There’s an election this May 2019! This May, voters elect some of the most important policymakers in our local government -- School Board members! Folks who set curriculum (from ethnic studies to healthcare) and teacher pay, determine budgets and funding, and create policies from free lunch for all to combat hate speech and discrimination.

In February 2019, APANO publicly announced our 2019 May Special Election Candidate Endorsement process for 7 races for the May 21, 2019 Primary Election. Through a months-long process of research, reflection, and real-time conversations with candidates and our community, APANO has worked to inform our community of the importance of local school board elections to build AAPI Political Power -- by asking voters and our supporters to elect candidates who care about representation, who care about human dignity, and share our APANO values.

Building on our successes from the last round of School Board elections in May 2017 -- which saw six APANO-endorsed School Board candidates elected, including four women of color -- this year APANO is excited to support 7 women candidates, 8 candidates of color, including 3 API candidates, a former refugee and now community organizer, and several incumbent electeds who have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the lives of our API communities in the greater Portland area!
