What’s going on in Portland in July? Lots, including the launch of APANO’s summer cultural event series, MicCheck! Spanning July through October, MicCheck! utilizes the arts to illuminate pressing issues affecting Asians and Pacific Islanders and other communities of color. EVENTS

• Saturday, 7/1: Tender Table: Hang Vu + Béalleka – Tender Table is a storytelling platform featuring women of color and gender non-conforming people of color to share stories about food, family, and identity. Join us for presentations by BÉALLEKA + HANG VU. 3pm-5pm, High and Low Gallery.
• Thursday, 7/6: "Voices From the Front Lines": The State of Community Driven Media in Portland – Join Portland Zine Symposium in conversation with four community activists and media personalities: Israel Bayer of Street Roots, Zahir Janmohamed of The Racist Sandwich Podcast, Melanie Stevens of Miss Anthology comics program, and Andre Middleton of Open Signal and XRay FM, as we talk about the state of community driven media in Portland. 6:30pm-8:30pm, Tabor Space.
• Saturday, 7/8: Portland International Muslim Cultural Festival – Please join us for this celebration of the diverse cultures and traditions of Muslims, representing over 42 ethnic groups in Portland, to bridge greater understanding and dialogue. Festival will feature: cultural performances and music; food from around the world; international market experience; arts, crafts, henna, and Islamic calligraphy; and resources and learning opportunities. 11am-5pm, Director Park.
• Sunday, 7/9: Arresting Power Benefit Screening - $10 at the door. Proceeds to benefit NAACP Portland Chapter. 7:30pm-10:30pm, Leaven Community.
• Wednesday, 7/19: Pan-African Film Series - No Revolution Without Organization - No Revolution Without Organization is another speech by another one of our ideological teachers, Kwame Ture, speaking to the importance of an organized united front, as well as cultural and political education in the struggle for African liberation all over the world. 6pm-9pm, Smith Memorial Student Union, Portland State University.
• Friday, 7/21: Noche de Arte: Pochas Radicales - "Noche de Arte 2017" Featuring las Pochas Radicales. 6pm PDX Latinx Pride weekend Opening Reception, 7pm Pochas Radicales Show. $10 Suggested Donation. 6pm, Q Center.
• Friday, 7/21: Art Spark: Summer Vibes - Art Spark is back! Art Spark is hosted by Regional Arts & Culture Council and is a quarterly networking event meant to connect local artists, businesses, and creators in the Portland Community. Connect with Portland Emerging Arts Leaders (PEAL) and network with Portland creatives. As always, our Art Spark DJ, VNPRT will be providing the music. Event is all ages and free. 6pm-9pm, Disjecta.
• Saturday, 7/22: PDX Latinx Pride Festival 2017 - Join us at the PDX Latinx Pride Festival 2017! FOOD CARTS - DRINKS - DANCE - SHOWS - ENTERTAINMENT - EXHIBITORS - PHOTO BOOTH - FUN! Everyone who wants to celebrate Latino, Latina, Latinx, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Pride and all their friends and allies is invited. • Saturday, 7/22 - Sunday, 7/23: Portland Zine Symposium - The Portland Zine Symposium is an organization that hosts, among other events, a yearly free conference and zine social exploring facets of independent publishing and DIY culture. This event has been held in Portland, Oregon every summer since 2001 and hosts over 150 tablers from around the world each year, as well as many free workshops, panels, and discussions. 12pm-6pm, Jade/APANO Multicultural Space (JAMS).
• Sunday, 7/23: 2017 Summer Community Care Festival at IRCO - Come build community through arts, food and fun! Engage and support neighbors and families and strengthen neighborhoods, access vision screening, blood pressure, lead testing, other direct care, and learn about and sign up for Social Services with Multnomah County. 11am-3pm, IRCO.
• Sunday, 7/23: PDX World Refugee Day! - Come celebrate our local refugee community with cultural song, dance, food, a marketplace, job fair, and kids activities. 12pm-4pm, Delta Park.
• Tuesday, 7/25: American Revolutionary: A Free Community Film Screening Hosted by APANO in Solidarity of Black Lives – Join us for a screening and discussion of American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs, which tells the inspiring story of a Chinese American writer, activist, and philosopher rooted for more than 70 years in the African American movement. This film of interracial solidarity will be followed by a panel discussion featuring members of Black Lives Matter Portland, All-African People's Revolutionary Party, Don't Shoot PDX, and Portland Asians4BlackLives. This event is part of MicCheck!, a summer cultural event series organized by APANO’s Arts & Media Project (AMP). 5:30pm-8pm, North Portland Library.
• Wednesday, 7/26: Whitenoise project 5: Borderlands – Join us for a conversation between Stephanie Adams-Santos, Rios De La Luz and Andrea Telles of Pochas Radicales about geography and hybridity, and what living in the Borderlands means for many normal Americans whose stories are not told often enough. 7pm-9pm, High and Low Gallery.
• Thursday, 7/27: Citizen Artist Meet & Greet – Connect with new and old friends, artists, culture bearers, and organizers in the Portland area all interested in meeting folx committed to creating moments for collective imagination, storytelling, and enacting democracy through a culture of belonging! Share a drink and share your practice with the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture’s West Coast Regional Envoy, Katherin Canton (coming from Oakland, CA to visit). 4pm-7pm, Stein Haus.
• Friday, 7/28: Cultural Organizing - Oregon Style – EXPLORE CULTURAL ORGANIZING TOOLS, RESOURCES, & OPPORTUNITIES IN OREGON: The U.S. Department of Arts and Culture (USDAC) is a people-powered department and action network, inciting creativity and social imagination to shape a culture of empathy, equity, and belonging. In this 3 hour gathering, you will meet other local organizers, community members, and citizen artists through games and co-created conversations that exemplify the USDAC’s organizing tools. You will walk away with a deeper local network, some organizing/art making/facilitation tools, and a connection to a national network of people planting seeds for collective imagination! 11am-1pm, Jade/APANO Multicultural Space (JAMS).

OPPORTUNITIES

• Apply for an Oregon Literary Fellowship: Apply for the Oregon Literary Fellowships, including the Writer of Color fellowship! The deadline to apply for a 2018 Oregon Literary Fellowship is July 10, 2017. Fellowship will be awarded in the amount of $3,500. Full guidelines can be found here.
• Apply to be a vendor at the 2017 Summer Community Care Festival at IRCO: Community Care Festivals thanks you for your participation in our 2017 Summer Festival. The 2017 Summer Festival will be held at IRCO, 10301 NE Glisan St. Portland, on July 22, 2017. Major funding from a generous grant from East Portland Action Plan. The event is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Vendor set-up is open at 10:00 a.m. Take-down is at 3:00 p.m. Apply here.
• Discounted workshops for artists at the Regional Arts & Culture Council: APANO affiliates receive a $5 discount for professional development workshops using the code APANO2017. Link: RACC 2017 workshops.

The Cultural Work Roundup is a monthly spotlight on arts and cultural events and opportunities that:

• Directly relate to APANO's cultural work strategies to impact beliefs, actions and policies through centering the voices of those most impacted and silenced, resisting and shifting harmful narratives and ideas, and moving beyond defensive strategies to envisioning alternatives.
• Centralize the voices of Oregon-based Asian and Pacific Islander artists and/or artists of color.

Events may include readings, exhibitions, festivals, openings, and performances. Opportunities may include calls for artistic submissions, grant and funding opportunities, and volunteer opportunities. The deadline for submissions is the third Friday of each month for events and opportunities that fall into the following month. For example, events and opportunities that take place in June are due to APANO by the third Friday in May.

The Cultural Work Roundup will be posted on APANO's website and shared via APANO's digital communications platforms. Events and opportunities will be posted at APANO's discretion based on alignment with our cultural work values.
