Apply to be a Mentor for the API Community Leadership Institute

Mentor an emerging community leader through the API Community Leadership Institute!

APANO is seeking volunteers to serve as mentors for our Asian Pacific Islander Community Leadership Institute (API-CLI), an eight month intensive leadership development and advocacy program.

The Asian Pacific Islander Community Leadership Institute was founded in 2011 with the vision of building the leadership capacity of community leaders and of building collaborative alliances and partnerships among Asian Pacific Islander (API) communities to address racial and ethnic disparities. The Institute is led by Immigrant and Refugee Community/Asian Family Center (IRCO/Asian Family Center) in partnership with the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO). It is one of six culturally-specific leadership programs funded by the Meyer Memorial Trust through the Coalition of Communities of Color.

As part of the API-CLI experience, all fellows are matched with an appropriate mentor, an Asian and Pacific Islander professional or community leader. Mentors support API-CLI participants in developing their leadership skills, provide a one-on-one space to reflect on the participant's API-CLI experience, and share expertise from their own leadership journeys and experience addressing racial disparities for API communities in Oregon. In conjunction with the regular workshops and community action projects, mentors round out the creation of a safe and supportive space for the API-CLI fellows to gain leadership skills and increase their civic engagement and advocacy in Oregon.

API-CLI begins in September and runs through April. Key dates for mentors are:

  • August 2015 - Mentor selection
  • September 2015 - Required mentor orientation (in person, webinar or one-on-one options available)
  • October 2015 - Mentors and fellows matched
  • November through March 2016 - Mentors and fellows meet once per month
  • April 9, 2016 - API-CLI Graduation

PLEASE NOTE: If you are selected as a mentor, we will make every effort to match you with a participant. At the same time, please be advised that there might not be a good participant match this year.

The application closes Friday, August 7! Apply online here or return a PDF version to Kara Carmosino at kara@apano.org. All applicants will be notified of next steps by Monday, August 17.
