Greetings, friends of APANO! We’re a month into 2018, and there are plenty of opportunities to support social justice and local artists of color. Check out a few of them below!

EVENTS

• Thursday, 2/1: Mary E. Lockridge Presentation – To commemorate Black History Month and our "Million Dollar Grandma", Marcella Leonard will be presenting her grandmother's story as a Jazz vocalist. 7pm. Clark County Historical Museum.
• Thursday, 2/1: Black Lives Matter Opening Night at the Woodlawn Mic – In 2017 we hosted dozens of Bystander Intervention workshops, trainings, dialogues and facilitated conversations. This gave us an opportunity to research, listen, and learn. It’s time to share the education and develop the community access to partnerships that Matter. Resistance is necessary though you have to build communities to make it sustainable. 6pm. Woodland MIC.
• Saturday, 2/3: Tender Table: Haya Bashir, Maya Vivas, Shayla Lawson – Tender Table is a storytelling platform featuring femmes of color and nonbinary people of color and their stories about food, family, and identity. Join us for stories and food by Haya Bashir, Maya Vivas, and Shayla Lawson. Tickets are $5-20 sliding scale. 3pm-5pm. 14 NE Killingsworth St.
• Saturday, 2/3 - Sunday, 2/25: Chitra — The Girl Prince – NWCT is thrilled to introduce a new collaboration with Anita Menon, who co-directed 2015’s smash hit, Indian-dance infused adaptation of The Jungle Book. Featuring epic martial arts sequences and a wide range of dance styles, Chitra: The Girl Prince tells the story of a warrior princess who struggles to stay true to herself while balancing her responsibility to her people with the call of true love. 12pm, 4pm. NW Neighborhood Cultural Center.
• Thursday, 2/8: Native Professionals & Friends Night at Froelick Gallery – Froelick Gallery, is hosting our next Native Professionals and Friends Night. NPFN is an evening for local networking, bringing together leaders in all areas of the community, including professionals from the business and public sector, community organization representatives, and job seekers. This event is open to everyone, Native and Non-Native, interested in making friends and building relationships. 5:30pm-7:30pm. Froelick Gallery.
• Wednesday, 2/14: Lonely Hearts ZINGO – Come play a bit of z-i-n-g-o at Portland Zine Symposium's kick off fundraiser of the year! There will be zines! prizes! jokes! bake sale! selfies! feels! awkwardness! romance! candy! What's zingo? Its bingo with a zing! Its bingo with zines! 6pm-9pm. Milepost 5.
• Saturday, 2/17: Vagina Monologues – Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated presents the Vagina Monologues! Join us for a silent auction, staged reading of the Vagina Monologues, followed by a talk back. This fundraiser will benefit Raphael House. The mission of Raphael House is to engage our entire community in non-violent living through advocacy, education, and community outreach, and by providing a safe haven from domestic violence. 3pm. June Key Delta Community Center.
• Sunday, 2/18: Lunar New Year Celebration at Central Library – Lunar New Year is an important holiday in many Asian cultures. Join us to bring in the new year with cultural performances, educational activities and light refreshments. 2018 is the Year of the Dog. 2pm-4pm. Central Library.
• Saturday, 2/24: Lunar New Year Annual Banquet – Asian Pacific Islander Pride proudly presents the 2018 Lunar New Year Banquet. The banquet will be a night for all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Asians and Pacific Islanders and our friends and family to come together, enjoy good food and amazing local performances while celebrating each other. Seating is limited, so RSVP by February 15th. 6pm-9pm. Szechuan Chef.
• Monday, 2/26: 2018 August Wilson Monologue Competition – The August Wilson Monologue Competition returns to the Newmark Theatre on February 26. Portland-area high school students will dazzle you with performances of legendary playwright August Wilson's monologues. Two of them will continue on to compete in New York City at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway! 6:30pm-10pm. Newmark Theatre.

OPPORTUNITIES

• Discounted workshops for artists at the Regional Arts & Culture Council: APANO affiliates receive a $5 discount for professional development workshops using the code APANO2017. Link: RACC 2017 workshops.

The Cultural Work Roundup is a monthly spotlight on arts and cultural events and opportunities that:

• Directly relate to APANO's cultural work strategies to impact beliefs, actions and policies through centering the voices of those most impacted and silenced, resisting and shifting harmful narratives and ideas, and moving beyond defensive strategies to envisioning alternatives.
• Centralize the voices of Oregon-based Asian and Pacific Islander artists and/or artists of color.

Events may include readings, exhibitions, festivals, openings, and performances. Opportunities may include calls for artistic submissions, grant and funding opportunities, and volunteer opportunities. The deadline for submissions is the third Friday of each month for events and opportunities that fall into the following month. For example, events and opportunities that take place in June are due to APANO by the third Friday in May.

The Cultural Work Roundup will be posted on APANO's website and shared via APANO's digital communications platforms. Events and opportunities will be posted at APANO's discretion based on alignment with our cultural work values.
