It’s a new year, a new decade, and January is full of BIPOC arts and culture! Some of our community event highlights are below. Get out and support artists and cultural workers of color around town this month!

• Thursday, 1/2: BIPOC Caucus Meeting - This meeting will be a potluck for community building. Come meet with other people of color working on climate justice at 350PDX or within our partner organizations. 5 pm, 350PDX, 1820 NE 21st Ave.
• Sunday, 1/5: Critical Resistance Portland New Member Volunteer Training - Please join us for our new member & volunteer orientation. We'll have a short intro about CR and our work and then a workshop on the Prison Industrial Complex & PIC abolition. Light snacks and lunch provided. • Thursday, 1/9: IRCO Slavic Heritage Festival - Please join us at the Slavic Heritage Festivity for performances, food, community announcements, and other activities! This event will celebrate the presence and overall success of the Slavic and Eastern European community in Oregon. 6 - 8 pm, IRCO, 10301 NE Glisan St.
• Friday, 1/10: Portland QTBIPOC Job Fair – Freshen up your resume and bring all of your talents over to Q Center to meet our featured community partners. Learn about the employee benefits offered at these local companies and organizations and potentially make your next career move! Our goal for this event is to bring our Queer and Trans, Black, Indigenous and other people of color community members and local businesses and companies together for a day full of opportunities, information and networking! 10 am - 2 pm, Q Center, 4115 North Mississippi Ave.
• Friday 1/10: Minority Retort’s 5th Anniversary Show –Minority Retort, Portland's premier stand-up comedy showcase featuring comedians of color, celebrates five years of bringing the funny with another great lineup, featuring: Christian Burke, Dewa Dorje, Pedro Andrade, Isaac Pendergrass and headliner Madison Shepard! 8 pm, The Siren Theater, 315 NW Davis St.
• Friday 1/10: About Something – About Something is a stand-up comedy & music event, curated and hosted by subversive comics D Martin Austin & Carlos Kareem Windham. We are about community & solidarity building thru Black folx, People of Color, and QT fam laughing. 9 pm - 12 am, Jack London Revue, 529 SW 4th Ave.
• Saturday, 1/11: 2020 Advocacy Summit - On January 11, APANO will be hosting its first-ever Advocacy Summit! We invite all AAPI identifying community members to share their stories so we can build a broad collective vision for APANO’s policy and political advocacy. • Saturday 1/17: Orchards of 82nd Art Plan Launch - Join Roshani Thakore, Lynn Yarne, and Alex Chiu to celebrate the launch and have a community conversation on visioning the East Portland Art and Justice Lab! Come and collectively dream and scheme with us for the future! We'll have soup, storytelling, and much more! RSVP here. 6 - 9 pm, Orchards of 82nd, 8118 SE Division St.
• Saturday, 1/25: Lunar New Year Celebration! – Celebrate the Lunar New Year at the Portland Children’s Museum! This family friendly celebration will have a dance performance, a wishing wall, zodiac animals, and more! 11 am - 2 pm, Portland Children’s Museum, 4015 SW Canyon Road.
• Sunday, 1/26: Carla Rossi presents Rock Divas: A Drag Tribute to Hedwig - Portland's premier drag clown Carla Rossi (Anthony Hudson) and friends pay tribute to Hedwig and the legendary rock divas that young Hansel grew up listening to in East Berlin: “Here’s to Patti, and Tina, and Yoko, Aretha, and Nona, and Nico, and me!” 7:30 pm, Portland Center Stage at The Armory, 128 NW 11th Ave.

• Placemaking Applications with City Repair - Do you see the street intersection paintings around town, benches made of earth, or food forests? This event will explore how communities design and install the projects through the City Repair Project. This is a great event if you want to do such a project in your community or if you want to learn about how to volunteer with City Repair! A light supper is provided. More info can be found here.
• Mural Opportunity - On behalf of Home Forward, the largest provider of affordable housing in Oregon, the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) invites artists living in the U.S. to submit qualifications for a site-specific mural at Schrunk Riverview Tower (Schrunk Tower), a 118 -unit subsidized housing apartment community in the St. Johns neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. • AFFINITY: QTPOC Leadership Development Cohort Retreats - AFFINITY is a free, multigenerational QTBIPOC Leadership Development and Community Building Cohort in Portland. More information can be found here.
• Immigrant Art Exhibition – First Presbyterian Church in Portland will be hosting an exhibition September and October 2020 focussed on the Immigrant experience for area artists born outside the U.S. Prize awards will be given to several participants and many artists will have their work on display during those two months. • Low cost creative work spaces available at Broad Space, a co-working collective for artists who identify as female or non-binary. Spaces start at $95/month for a hot desk! Email: JeanettePDX@gmail.com for more details.

The Cultural Work Roundup is a monthly spotlight on arts and cultural events and opportunities that:

• Directly relate to APANO's cultural work strategies to impact beliefs, actions and policies through centering the voices of those most impacted and silenced, resisting and shifting harmful narratives and ideas, and moving beyond defensive strategies to envisioning alternatives.
• Centralize the voices of Oregon-based Asian and Pacific Islander artists and/or artists of color.

Events may include readings, exhibitions, festivals, openings, and performances. Opportunities may include calls for artistic submissions, grant and funding opportunities, and volunteer opportunities. The deadline for submissions is the third Monday of each month for events and opportunities that fall into the following month. For example, events and opportunities that take place in June are due to APANO by the third Monday in May.

The Cultural Work Roundup will be posted on APANO's website and shared via APANO's digital communications platforms. Events and opportunities will be posted at APANO's discretion based on alignment with our cultural work values.
