EVENTS

• Sunday, 7/1: QTIPOC Draw Night – Draw, craft, chat with other Queer/Trans/Inter* People of Color! The venue has free parking, and light snacks and tea will be provided. 6pm-10pm. IPRC.
• Sunday, 7/1 - Saturday 7/28: De-Cacon at Artists Milepost – De-Canon: A Visibility Project will be in residence at Artists Milepost in the cafe area from May 12-July 28. Our library now features over 400 books by writers of color. In addition to hosting a number of monthly readings and literary events, we'll also maintain open hours for the public to come and read and study in the space. Various times. 8155 NE Oregon St.
• Friday, 7/6: Moana (2016) PG - Movies in the Park - Summer Free For All – Bring your family and friends to a special screening of Moana (2016) PG at Kenilworth Park with closed captions on Friday, July 6. Pre-movie entertainment will be provided by Greydogz—New Orleans-style funk, blues, folk, and reggae. Pre-movie entertainment starts at 6:30 PM. Movie begins after dusk. 6:30pm. Kenilworth Park.
• Saturday, 7/7: Tropitaal Desi Latino Soundclash: Casual Aztec, Anjali, The Kid – When Anjali and The Kid started Tropitaal five years ago many people were confused, how do South Asian and Latin club music go together? Now J. Balvin tops the international charts with "Mi Gente" sampling a Bangladeshi film song, and on this year's trip to India Anjali and The Kid heard multiple reggaeton songs on Mumbai pop radio and a dembow mix being played in a Punjabi mall food court. 9pm. Goodfoot Pub & Lounge.
• Saturday, 7/7 - Sunday, 7/8: Speaking in Image: workshop with Alia Ali – In a two hour workshop, Alia Ali presents a platform for teachers, students, art enthusiasts and members of the community (14 and up) to explore image as a language. Ali conducts an interactive workshop on how to use light to transfer imagination into two dimensional artwork by engaging participants through discussions, brainstorming, sketching, and experimental activities. Individuals will leave the workshop feeling more enriched and confident in understanding image as a medium in which they can communicate their ideas, document their history, manifest expression, and hopefully, build an audience. • Wednesday, 7/18: Voices 2018 - We Resist, We Build, We Rise! – Every year, OPAL hosts Voices of a People’s History, an event that celebrates diverse movement leaders by sharing their stories, in their own words. Members of our community perform readings of notable speeches and essays from inspiring figures past and present, a radically empowering opportunity to hear the echoes of history in the present day. It's a yearly gathering that brings us closer together while strengthening our resolve to fight for racial, social and economic justice. It's important for us to amplify movement leaders, because we know that nobody else can tell our stories. We have to do this for ourselves. 5:30pm-8:30pm. 5225 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.
• Friday, 7/20: Movie and Music in the Park: CAN + Joe Kye – What does it take to heal from mental illness? Join us for a free screening of CAN, a documentary film by Pearl J. Park. CAN tells the story of Can Truong, a Vietnam war refugee, whose diagnosis with depression and bipolar disorder as a college student leads him on healing journey that explores his identity, family, and history. The film will be preceded by a concert by Joe Kye, a violinist-looper, composer, and producer based in Portland. In partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation’s Summer Free for All series. 6:30pm. Harrison Park.
• Monday, 7/23: Ollin Film Series - "Nuestra Voz" - Mercedes Sosa – For the second year in a row, The Hollywood Theatre and Latino Network are proud to present Ollin: Social Justice Film Series, a series exploring the social justice issues of today. The 2018 series “Nuestra Voz” features three films about prominent women who continue to shape and inspire our world today: Musicians Selena Quintanilla and Mercedes Sosa and artist Frida Kahlo. 7:30pm-10pm. Hollywood Theatre.
• Saturday, 7/28: Calligraphy for Beginners - Intro to Italic & Brush Pen – Spend a fun morning at wonderful Artist and Craftsman Supply SE. In this hands-on workshop, Bonnie of Rock Paper Calligraphy will introduce you to the basics of two popular lettering styles; Italic and Brush Pen lettering. All supplies are included. You will take home a beginner's kit which includes a Kuretake brush pen, Pilot Parallel pen, guide sheets, alphabets and full practice pad. $70 includes all materials and light refreshments. 10am. 3393 Southeast 21st Avenue.
• Saturday, 7/28 - Sunday, 7/29: Portland Zine Symposium 2018 – The Portland Zine Symposium 2018 will be held Saturday, July 28 & Sunday the 29th, at Wattle's Boy's & Girl's Club located at 9330 SE Harold St. in Portland, Oregon. Tabling and programming will be from 11 AM to 6 PM both days. This event is free, all ages, and kid friendly. It will also have air-conditioning. 11am-6pm. Boy and Girls Club.

OPPORTUNITIES

• Discounted workshops for artists at the Regional Arts & Culture Council: APANO affiliates receive a $5 discount for professional development workshops using the code APANO2017. Link: RACC 2017 workshops.

• RACC Opportunity: Call for Artists – Fresh Paint: The Regional Arts & Culture Council and Open Signal invite emerging artists/teams of artists who identify and belong to communities of color and are currently living in Clackamas, Multnomah or Washington County in Oregon, or Clark County in Washington to submit proposals for a temporary mural at Open Signal along the highly visible NE Martin Luther King, Jr Blvd. at 2766 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Portland. Fresh Paint is a partnership between RACC’s Public Art Murals program and Open Signal, a community-driven media arts center that provides the public with easy access to media tools, training, broadcast and opportunities for experimentation. Application Deadline: Monday, July 16, 2018, by 5:00pm PST.

The Cultural Work Roundup is a monthly spotlight on arts and cultural events and opportunities that:

• Directly relate to APANO's cultural work strategies to impact beliefs, actions and policies through centering the voices of those most impacted and silenced, resisting and shifting harmful narratives and ideas, and moving beyond defensive strategies to envisioning alternatives.
• Centralize the voices of Oregon-based Asian and Pacific Islander artists and/or artists of color.

Events may include readings, exhibitions, festivals, openings, and performances. Opportunities may include calls for artistic submissions, grant and funding opportunities, and volunteer opportunities. The deadline for submissions is the third Monday of each month for events and opportunities that fall into the following month. For example, events and opportunities that take place in June are due to APANO by the third Monday in May.

The Cultural Work Roundup will be posted on APANO's website and shared via APANO's digital communications platforms. Events and opportunities will be posted at APANO's discretion based on alignment with our cultural work values.
