September 2017 Cultural Work Roundup

APANO’s next big event following the Jade District Night Market is the EAST PORTLAND ARTS & LITERARY FESTIVAL! This spectacular one-day festival on September 23 will be a celebration of artists of color and the LAST public event at the Jade/APANO Multicultural Space. EVENTS

• Saturday, 9/2: Roots, Rhythm, Revolution: A Night of Cultural Resistance – Roots, Rhythm, Revolution: An Evening of Cultural Resistance, will celebrate our songs, dances, visual arts, and more. Frontline community members who are a part of the Oregon Just Transition Assembly have free access to this space. The broader community is invited to this unique occasion, a chance to uplift the individuals and communities doing the work to imagine Oregon’s Just Transition. 7pm-10pm, 10301 NE Glisan St.
• Sunday, 9/3: PDX 101: Art, Activism, & History – PDX 101 is a downtown walking tour that illustrates the origins of Portland and its journey to the present. While exploring downtown art, parks, buildings, and bridges, and important people, we cover the collective history of Portland: from pop culture to marginalized histories. KYC's PDX101 tour stands out with our emphasis on native history, Portland’s unique style of urban planning, and influential social movements make up our past. 2pm-4pm, Battleship Oregon Memorial, SW Natio Pkwy.
• Sunday, 9/3: This is a Black Spatial Imaginary, two performances and whatnot – This is a Black Spatial Imaginary brings together installation, video, print media, performance, and public intervention, exploring new forms of practice at the intersection of art, collaboration, historical record, urban planning, collaboration and creative exchange. 3pm-4:30pm, Paragon Arts Gallery, 815 N Killingsworth St.
• Tuesday, 9/5: Intro to Theatre of the Oppressed – Join Living Stages for a free introduction to Theatre of the Oppressed! This workshop is open to all community members, with no theatre experience necessary. Using techniques developed by Augusto Boal, we'll practice theatre games for community-building, share simple stories, and create scenes using our still images, rhythms and movement. 5pm-6:45pm, NEW Expressive Works.
• Tuesday, 9/5: City Repair Walking Tour – Do you see the street intersection paintings around town, benches made of earth, or food forests? This event will explore such sights in South Portland and discuss how communities design and install the projects through the City Repair Project. This is a great event if you want to do such a project in your community or learn how to volunteer with City Repair! 6pm-7:30pm, 2111 SE Madison St.
• Thursday, 9/7 - Sunday, 9/17: TBA:17 – Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA)’s Time-Based Art Festival activates the city of Portland, Oregon, with contemporary art projects that bring artists and audiences together, creating a vibrant community through live performances, music, screenings, workshops, talks, and visual art installations. Various performances, workshops, and locations.
• Saturday, 9/9: the body vigil: a group dance with Marbles Jumbo Radio – How might moving, listening, and being together as distinctly orientated bodies in everyday social and political spheres, further heighten our capacity to see what is hidden, erased, marginalized, forced underground? Explore these questions and more in this workshop as part of PICA’s Time-Based Art Festival. 10am-12pm, Jade/APANO Multicultural Space, 8114 SE Division St.
• Sunday, 9/17: Festival Of Nations – Celebrate foods, music, dance and vendors from around the world at this multicultural event. 11am-5pm, 14601 SE Division.
• Saturday, 9/23: East Portland Arts & Literary Festival – Join APANO’s Arts & Media Project for this full day of creative performances, workshops, and a book and craft fair led by artists of color and exploring what it means to immigrate, migrate, and find home. This festival is the LAST public event at the Jade/APANO Multicultural Space (JAMS) before it is transformed into a mixed-use development and affordable housing! Suggested donation is $5, and no one will be turned away from lack of funds. 11am-6pm, Jade/APANO Multicultural Space, 8114 SE Division St.
• Saturday, 9/23: Lakad for Lumad – On September 2017, a group of Portland creatives, teachers, community organizers, and business owners launch Lakad for Lumad, a 5k walk/run to raise funds for the Lumad hosted by LAKAD PDX. At the finish line is our Party in the Park centering Filipino cultural workers showcasing their music, Filipino cuisine, and projects. Funds will go towards building water systems and schools for indigenous communities in Mindanao, Philippines. 9am-1pm, Columbia Park.

• Apply to table at the East Portland Arts & Literary Festival: Are you an artist of color and want to have a table at the event to showcase and sell your artistic or literary good? Fill out this form and find more information on the event above.
• Apply for a FEAST Food System Mini-Grant: FEAST is a community organizing process that allows participants to engage in an informed and facilitated discussion about Food, Education and Agriculture in their community and begin to work toward Solutions Together to help build a healthier, more equitable and more resilient local food system. Up to $4,000 is available, and the application deadline is September 13. • Border Crossing Identities - Call For Creative Work: amART Project offers the opportunity for everybody to express themselves creatively about the world around them. CALL FOR CREATIVE WORK: For our first call of creative work we have selected the topic of identity and the complexities of our identities, "boarder crossing identities". Submissions due September 1. • Discounted workshops for artists at the Regional Arts & Culture Council: APANO affiliates receive a $5 discount for professional development workshops using the code APANO2017. Link: RACC 2017 workshops.

The Cultural Work Roundup is a monthly spotlight on arts and cultural events and opportunities that:

• Directly relate to APANO's cultural work strategies to impact beliefs, actions and policies through centering the voices of those most impacted and silenced, resisting and shifting harmful narratives and ideas, and moving beyond defensive strategies to envisioning alternatives.
• Centralize the voices of Oregon-based Asian and Pacific Islander artists and/or artists of color.

Events may include readings, exhibitions, festivals, openings, and performances. Opportunities may include calls for artistic submissions, grant and funding opportunities, and volunteer opportunities. The deadline for submissions is the third Friday of each month for events and opportunities that fall into the following month. For example, events and opportunities that take place in June are due to APANO by the third Friday in May.

The Cultural Work Roundup will be posted on APANO's website and shared via APANO's digital communications platforms. Events and opportunities will be posted at APANO's discretion based on alignment with our cultural work values.
