The Jade District: Where Every Week is Dumpling Week

From February 1st to 7th, the Oregonian will be hosting Portland's first Dumpling Week. They will publish features and recipes online and in print, and 19 Portland restaurants will be offering a special dumpling dish on their menus. Participants who eat their way through these restaurants will then be eligible to win prizes such as gift certificates and cookbooks.

Just browsing the list, you can see variations of dumplings from all over the world. Kenny & Zuke’s is doing fried kreplach, a traditional Jewish dumpling. Viking Soul Food is doing onion klubb (or Norwegian potato dumplings with onion). While there is great diversity in dumplings from cuisines around the world, there is not so much in terms of where these restaurants are located within Portland. The one restaurant east of 42nd Ave. is Country Cat, who will be serving classic chicken and dumplings.

No list of restaurants during Dumpling Week would be complete without highlighting some of the restaurants in the Jade District or further west in Beaverton. The Jade District, the neighborhood around SE 82nd and Division is one of the diverse communities in the city and is particularly known for immigrant owned shops and restaurants. The western suburbs also include ethnic enclaves with some pretty authentic dumpling experiences.

The restaurants on this list specialize and serve dumplings from throughout Asia everyday and not just as part of a weeklong celebration. We encourage you to venture beyond the city center for some amazing dumpling experiences. You can stop by Salt & Straw afterwards for the “Berries & Dumplings Ice Cream Sundae" afterwards for desert.

This list is not comprehensive of what our region has to offer, but is a great starting point. Our restaurants may not have the celebrity chef star power of other dumpling week participants such as Vitaly Paley of Paley’s Place and Imperial, but our dumplings are made every day with love and on weekends the lines at our dim sum shops are as long as any fancy Portland brunch place.
